Granta #171
From Nobel laureates to debut novelists, international translations to investigative journalism, each themed issue of Granta turns the attention of the world’s best writers on to one aspect of the way we live now.
Issue #171 is dedicated to ‘Dead Friends’, inviting writers to find alternatives to the standard eulogy or obituary when paying tribute to old friends and mentors alike. ‘In these pages, writers have transmitted the flickering aura of their departed friends’ writes editor Thomas Meaney, whose own friendship with the late Gary Indiana concludes in the issue, presenting the beginning of the novel Indiana was working on before his death.
Elsewhere, there's Tao Lin on publisher Giancarlo DiTrapano; Renata Adler on political theorist Hannah Arendt; plus Aatish Taseer and Fernanda Eberstadt on mentors V.S. Naipaul and Andy Warhol—two figures ‘whose influence was as burdensome as it was formative.’ With Nan Goldin's photography on the cover.
